A short guide to PMU

With so many options for permanent makeup and different names for the procedure, it’s no wonder that it is a very confusing subject.

In this post, we will aim to answer our most frequently asked questions around PMU (Permanent Makeup) and what you should know before having a treatment.

Permanent Makeup PMU

So, what is the difference between Permanent Makeup and Semi Permanent Makeup?

Semi Permanent Makeup
The simple answer is……… not a thing – we used to refer to this treatment as semi permanent makeup as the results are not truly permanent as with a normal tattoo , however, as some pigment may remain in the skin (whether you can see it or not) we now call this Permanent Makeup. Other terms that you may hear are:

  • Permanent Makeup
  • Semi Permanent Makeup
  • Micropigmentation
  • Cosmetic Tattoo
  • SPMU
  • PMU
  • Makeup Tattoo

These all refer to the same treatment whether we are treating brows, lips, eyes or medical procedures such as areola pigmentation, scar camouflage or scalp pigmentation.

Is Microblading the same as Permanent Brows?

In recent years, brows have become the epicentre of the PMU world; this in turn has sparked new and exciting treatments such as hair stroke brows. This is the process of creating individual hair strokes to give the illusion of real eyebrows rather than a ‘powder look’ shaded brow.

Hair stoke brows can be done with a micropigmentation machine or a manual blade, which is called Microblading,. These hyper real brows also have many, different names, here are some examples:

  • Hair Stroke Brow
  • Microblading
  • Blading
  • Permanent Brows
  • 3D Brows
  • 6D brows
  • Brow Embroidery
  • Feather Brows
  • Brow Branching

Is a lip enhancement the same as having fillers?

There are lots of options for lip enhancements using PMU but none will involve having any fillers injected into the lip. There are great techniques to make the lips look fuller and more youthful with colour rather than an injectable. These range from a simple contour or outline, which sharpens the border giving the look of a younger lip.  We can also use 3D shading techniques, which make the lip look more plump and voluminous.  Lip Enhancements will often be referred as:

  • Permanent Lips
  • 3D Lips
  • Lip Blush
  • Lip Stain
  • Lip Contour
  • Lip Enhancement

Is Permanent Makeup really permanent?

Easily our most frequently asked question! This really is the most difficult question to answer as there are so many variables such as – the technician, the clients skin type and health, the pigments that were used and depth of the work, exposure to sunlight, medications etc etc etc.   The easiest answer that will be applicable to most clients is that we expect most treatments to last somewhere between 12-36 months and recommend a maintenance session at around 15-18 months to keep the colour fresh.

Is PMU a tattoo? PMU is not a tattoo although we use a very similar technique to implant the colour, we work at a different depth in the skin and use pigments rather than inks, these factors all play a large part in how ‘permanent’ the treatment will be.
